International Women’s Day has been celebrated on 8th March every year since the early 1990’s. The day recognises women's rights to equality and justice, and to be free from sexual harassment, violence, and discrimination.
Purple is the colour chosen to symbolise International Women’s Day, because it’s symbolic of justice and dignity. So, in honour of International Women’s Day, here are some of our favourite purple flowers from the Lucy’s collection.
Carousel
For international women’s day, we love the irises featured in our Carousel Bouquet because it’s named after the Greek goddess of the rainbows, Iris. It was said that purple irises were planted over the graves of women, summoned the goddess Iris, to guide them on their journey to heaven.
The chrysanthemums found in the Carousel are also perfect for IWD. Often called ‘mums’ for short, the flowers are also the symbolic flower for mother’s day.
Van Gough
The Purple Sonia Orchids found in our Van Gough bouquet have historically always symbolised love and beauty - while purple orchids particularly represent royalty, respect, admiration and dignity. Perfect for women's day.
Autumn Breeze
Autumn Breeze features stunning deep purple Aranda Orchids, these flowers are a great choice to represent women as the perfect symmetry of an orchids face has been compared to that of a beautiful woman’s many times throughout history.
